WANA (Aug 28) – While the US Energy Secretary spoke of offering Iran nuclear cooperation similar to what it provided to Saudi Arabia, President Trump had not only set preconditions for Riyadh but also made such cooperation strictly contingent on serving US national interests.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that they had told the Iranians that the US would cooperate with them to develop nuclear power and provide them with enriched uranium, just as they were then cooperating with Saudi Arabia.
However, Trump had stated in late July that a precondition for any nuclear deal with Riyadh was the kingdom joining the Abraham Accords and normalizing relations with Israel.
In the same speech, Wright noted that there was no reason to provide enrichment technology to Saudi Arabia in the short term. He added that such a possibility would only be discussed years down the line, and only if it made commercial sense and aligned with their national security framework.
Wright further suggested that Saudi Arabia had uranium reserves and that perhaps they should mine uranium there.
