A US Senate bill has even proposed secondary tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries buying Russian energy, potentially impacting major buyers like India and China. This economic pressure has also coincided with a tightening of immigration policy, disproportionately affecting Indian H-1B workers, with a new proposed fee of over one hundred thousand dollars for new petitions.5- Meanwhile, Canada has also found itself in the crosshairs. Ottawa recently announced retaliatory tariffs of 15, 25, and 50 percent on C$27.6 billion of US goods, effective September 8th, matching Washington’s measures dollar for dollar. Scientists are investigating the cause, with satellite imagery suggesting a glacier-related avalanche may have triggered the sudden surge of water, temporarily blocking a river and creating a natural dam that later breached.9- The US Geological Survey also recorded a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Tibet around the same time, though it’s not yet determined if it contributed to the avalanche.
