Germans now see the US as their most important foreign policy partner; Americans still say their own is the UK

  1. why has france gone down so much and US up? im guessing a bit is trump being gone but still thats quite a jump in both ways

  2. That’s a funny way to spell bitch, the difference between how the US actually deal with UK vs Israel & Germany, shows that the US public are pretty much in the dark about the importance of their partners.

  3. How can germany be an important policy partner, they speak a weird language that is not American.

  4. As a German I can’t really make any sense of that. Under Trump support for the US must have been at an all time low and now under Biden nothing much happened to increase the trust towards the US.

    Same for France btw

  5. Wtf happened? The year to year change is insane. Is it because suddenly all German media started praising Biden for not being Trump (even if the foreign policy have not changed all that much) ?

  6. I have some serious doubts about this poll.

Also I would not say we perceive our relationship with France from the point of view of foreign policy. The EU and especially the relationship and coordination with France on all types of topics and different fields is in a category its own. It’s a different thing altogether.

Nor is foreign policy something most people are in the least bit interested in.

If the choice is US, China or Russia, yeah the US is the more important partner when it comes to foreign policy.

  7. The Americans have it fairly accurate.

Their most important partners are clearly the UK, Canada and Australia/NZ.

I’d say Germany’s most important partner is clearly France and maybe even Russia if you don’t take partner to mean “friend”.

  8. I thought that the US’s most important foreign policy partner was Ireland? According to that *little ol’ boy from Scranton Pennsylvania*….. /s

  9. Don’t worry French friends Germans have high initial expectations for every democratic president. That will change.

  10. Controversial opinion on here but the french/german special relationship that people always mention on here seems nothing but forced from the top, and not one french person that I have spoken to irl about it has argued to the contrary, and you know how french people are with discussing politics, so it was a decent amount.

  11. Germany has no military to speak of, throws Eastern Europe under the bus on a regular basis and grovels to China and Russia, they are not the most important partner for any nation.

  12. I would love a more German-France cooperative spirit. I know Dutch policymakers hate it, but as a Dutchman and European. I am all for it.

  13. I feel like 90% of the people on this sub are German. Feels like every second post is somehow related to Germany

  14. Don’t worry my French companions, this seems like a manipulated study. Never ever have I heard anyone in recent time call the US “the most important foreign policy partner”.

You’ll always be in our hearts, even if you hate us just a little bit!

  15. Yeah no, they definitely polled some weird people!!! Probably career politicians and staffers. I.e. People who are able to know and distinguish foreign policy objectives of these countries and compare them to their own.

  16. Who do the U.K. see as their most important policy partner (over the same time period, with the same partners)? I’d be interested to see if that has changed also

  17. This is not about which country germans like more, its about which country germans thinki has the bigger influence on german foreign policy. And considering the US just pulled the afghanistan debakel it is no suprise the US is so far higher then France.

The question could be worded “who does the most shit globally that has direct influence on germany” and it would be the same result basically.

The first person the new german chancelor is visiting is the french president to reinforce french-german relationships as germanies most important partner in europe. He isnt going to the US president first, he goes to France.
