Ukraine faced a demanding opening test, with every possession carrying extra weight as the race for three World Cup places intensified.
Ukraine’s men’s national basketball team made a strong start to the second stage of qualification for the 2027 World Championship. In their opening game, the Ukrainian team defeated Greece 82–76.

Ukraine power forward Vyacheslav Bobrov, speaking to the press service of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine, emphasized that the success against the Greeks is of great importance in the battle to qualify for the World Championship.
It was a very tough game. Our opponents fought from the very first seconds, but we tried to impose our style of play. There were stretches when we lost the rebounding battle, but in the end we tried to defend tightly, not allow them to shoot, and they were “living” off our fouls. We always respect our opponent, but this victory is very important.

Bobrov Assesses Ukraine’s Performance Against Greece
According to the basketball player, the Ukrainians tried to maintain a high tempo throughout the match. At the same time, the Greek national team has considerable international experience, including appearances at World Championships.
Bobrov also highlighted the contribution of all players who came off the bench. He stressed that each of them helped the team both offensively and defensively.
It is very difficult to maintain the same tempo. We tried to play quickly, but the Greeks have been playing basketball for many years and have competed at World Championships. We tried to involve all the players. Every basketball player who came off the bench strengthened the game, scored points, and defended as if it were their last game. This victory brings us one step closer to qualifying for the World Championship.

Ukraine’s Standings in Group I
After the first match of the second qualifying stage, Ukraine has 12 points and shares the lead in Group I with Spain.

Greece – 10 points.
The top three teams in the group will qualify for the final stage of the 2027 World Championship. The victory over Greece was an important step for Ukraine’s national team toward achieving that goal.
