Brecheen gives support for tariffs, but votes are scarce on tariffs | Sports

He acknowledged that some people say tariffs are hurting them.

“I went to the National Tax Foundation and asked them if the tariff I’m paying per tax filers or the boost that I got from the tax relief –you know, you were going to have a 22 percent tax increase if not for the One Big Beautiful Bill, what they did in 2017 wasn’t permanent,” he said. “He said you are $1,700 per year better off.”

On Aug. 23, President Donald Trump announced 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods as trade talks fell apart, and then Canada announced retaliatory 50 percent tariffs on goods from particular U.S. states set to go into effect on Sept. 8. 

Afterwards, when asked about what votes Congress has taken on tariffs, he recalled one last year.

“I wasn’t with Tom McClintock [R-CA-5] on that,” he said, referring to a U.S. House colleague who has opposed tariffs.

Brecheen said he did not know of House votes related to tariffs coming up.

Brecheen is running for a third term against Democrat Brandon Wade, a union laborer whom he defeated in 2024, and independent Ronnie Hopkins.
