Tom Cruise will return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in a Days of Thunder sequel.
Anne Hathaway is joining the cast as a team owner and engineer.
The new film is expected to release on June 2, 2028.
Tom Cruise is in the driver’s seat once again.
The 64-year-old will be returning as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in a sequel to his 1990 racing film Days of Thunder. Anne Hathaway will join him as a team owner and engineer in the new movie, which is expected to release on June 2, 2028.
Cruise will produce the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the original project, and Tommy Harper. Jonathan Levine, known for his work on Snatched and Long Shot, will be directing. While details about the plot remain scarce, Will Staples will be writing the script.
The Mission: Impossible star also shared the news to his Instagram, posting a video with Hathaway in front of a racecar.
“We’re coming out summer of 2028,” Cruise said. “Don’t be late.”
The sequel will race into theaters nearly four decades after the Tony Scott-directed feature premiered. In the original, Cruise’s rookie driver Trickle gets recruited to a new NASCAR team and engages in a rivalry with veteran racer Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker). The two bond after getting into a serious accident, which also leads Trickle to a romance with his neurosurgeon Dr. Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman).
The original cast also features stars like Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes, and John C. Reilly. Further casting for the sequel has yet to be announced. At the close of the 1990 movie, Trickle is in a relationship with Claire. Cruise famously married Kidman that same year, divorcing in 2001.

In the first film, Cruise and his castmates did their own driving, which occasionally hit the skids. Elwes, who played Trickle’s new rival Russ Wheeler, recently recalled an accident that the Top Gun actor had on set.
“Tom put a car in the wall, actually, on his first day of driving, you know, and these things are not cheap,” Elwes told Entertainment Tonight in March. “And he was so funny on film. His last words before crashing were, ‘Hello, wall.'”
Elwes said that the stunts had been “nuts” but were also “great fun.” He shared insight on what it was like working with Cruise on the film.

“He’s a terrific guy. He really is so fun to work with, so, so professional and so supportive of everybody,” he continued.
And Elwes is not the only person from the Days of Thunder set to reminisce on the film recently. Bruckheimer reflected on the racing film ahead of the release of 2025’s F1.
“It’s a whole different story than what we did with Days of Thunder, which was a terrific film,” Bruckheimer told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2024. “Tom was great in it. I think we wrecked 35 cars in [Days of Thunder], but we can’t do that with F1 cars. They’re way too expensive.”
