Pierre Piccavet, a police officer and president of FLAG!, an association defending LGBTQ people’s rights, was hospitalized in central Paris. The attack occurred overnight into Sunday in the historic Marais district as he was leaving a bar.
Attack circumstances
According to France 24, citing the prosecutor’s office, Piccavet was struck with a bottle. The victim sustained several injuries, including internal bleeding and a head wound.
According to Piccavet, the attacker repeatedly shouted homophobic insults at him. The prosecutor’s office said he immediately identified himself as a police officer and showed his service ID, but this did not stop the suspect.

Reaction and detention
The suspect was taken into custody. According to the prosecutor’s office, he had no previous convictions and was intoxicated at the time of the attack.
The STOP Homophobie association described the incident as a homophobic attack and published photographs of Piccavet’s injuries. The organization said that violence against LGBT+ people remains a reality.
Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire condemned the attack, calling it a “despicable homophobic attack.” He said Paris would remain a city of freedom for everyone.
