A 22-year-old woman was killed and five other people were injured when gunfire broke out at a rave party in northern Switzerland, according to officials. The suspect or suspects remain at large.
The shooting happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the Schachen area of Aarau, the capital of Aargau canton, according to cantonal police.
Police said the attacker or attackers used two different weapons. Authorities found 9 mm ammunition, which can be used in pistols or submachine guns, and 5.45 by 39 mm ammunition, which is commonly used in assault rifles.
The woman who died was a 22-year-old Italian national, while the five people who were injured, four men and one woman between the ages of 24 and 27, were taken to hospitals. At least one of them is seriously injured, but police said none are in life-threatening condition.
Police said the injured victims appear to have been randomly targeted. It remains unclear whether the shooting was carried out by one person or several people, and no motive has been established.
Investigators are considering a terror attack, a mass shooting or a criminal settling of scores as possible explanations. A nationwide manhunt is underway with support from Swiss federal authorities, police from neighboring cantons and German police.
Authorities said there is no evidence of an immediate increased threat to the public beyond Switzerland’s normal threat level, but police have increased their presence in public spaces and at events across Aargau canton.
