Archaeologists in the Czech Republic uncovered a prehistoric structure built around 6,500 years ago, roughly 1,000 years before workers raised the first stones at Stonehenge, and the discovery reshapes how researchers think about early astronomical knowledge in Central Europe.
The team found the structure at Chleby, in the Central Bohemian Region, where a circular enclosure stretches about 750 feet (230 meters) across and follows a ditch roughly 8 feet (2.5 meters) deep, a scale that already signals significant communal effort from the Neolithic farming community that built it. Twelve separate entrances break through the ditch at different points around the circle, and researchers involved in the project announced the find in a statement released on August 18. The team believes wooden posts once formed the enclosure’s walls, though those posts have long since decayed, leaving only their ditch imprint and a scatter of animal bones behind as evidence.
Petr Kristuf, an archaeology professor at the University of West Bohemia who leads the research team, called the site’s basic shape unusual on its own, since “circular enclosures are completely unknown in our region for this period, which already makes the site exceptional.” That rarity alone would justify attention from archaeologists, but a closer look at how the builders positioned those twelve entrances revealed something even more remarkable: a deliberate system for tracking the sun and moon.
How the prehistoric structure tracked the sun and moon
Kristuf explained that once the team analyzed the entrances in detail, “it became clear that their arrangement was not random,” since their geometry forms a coherent system for observing the most significant moments in both the solar and lunar cycles. Standing inside the enclosure, ancient observers could track the moon’s most extreme position on the horizon during its 18.6-year cycle (the recurring pattern in which the moon’s rising and setting points drift to their farthest extremes before slowly returning), a subtle rhythm that requires years of patient observation to detect.
The same entrances also aligned precisely enough to frame sunrise on the summer solstice, the year’s longest day, and sunset on the winter solstice, its shortest, giving the community a reliable way to mark the two turning points of the annual solar cycle. Kristuf connected that design choice to deeper symbolic meaning among early farming societies, noting that “the connection between sunrise and the summer solstice symbolized a beginning, while sunset and the winter solstice represented an ending.”
He drew a direct comparison to Stonehenge’s famous layout, adding that “the same principle can be seen along Stonehenge’s main axis,” and concluding that the Chleby structure appears to have been “designed similarly,” despite predating the English monument by roughly a millennium, a striking sign that separate prehistoric communities converged independently on comparable solutions for reading the sky.
Bull skulls, later burials, and the structure’s unanswered mystery
Animal bones recovered from the ditch suggest the builders decorated the twelve entryways with bull skulls and horns, a detail that fits a broader pattern researchers have documented across prehistoric Europe. Jan Turek, an archaeologist at Charles University in Prague involved in the research, explained that “the cult of the bull was an important religious symbol among the first farming communities,” since these animals likely represented strength and fertility to people whose survival depended directly on successful harvests and healthy livestock.
The site’s ritual purpose did not last forever, though, and evidence shows its meaning shifted or disappeared entirely over the following millennia. Earlier excavations at Chleby had already uncovered burials of 18 people from the Bronze Age Unetice culture, dated to roughly 2300 to 1600 B.C., a culture famous elsewhere for producing the Nebra Sky Disc, and the site may have retained some ritual significance during that period.
Everything changed by the Iron Age, roughly 800 B.C. to 1 B.C., when builders constructed an ordinary settlement directly over the former sanctuary, a transformation Kristuf described starkly: “the ditch was gradually filled in, and an ordinary settlement was established on the site of the former sanctuary.” Researchers now plan to analyze the site’s soil chemistry, since, as archaeologist Jan Fiser of the University of Hradec Kralove noted, people leave chemical traces behind alongside physical artifacts, offering fresh clues about exactly how this exceptional site changed hands across thousands of years of prehistory.
