Five pumping appliances and three tankers were attending the second Swamp Rd fire.
“Firefighting conditions are extremely difficult due to the high winds,” Dunbar said.
The size of the fires was not yet known, and Fire and Emergency had not yet determined what caused them.
No buildings were threatened and no injuries had been reported.
Firefighters were also called to two smaller vegetation fires in the area later on Monday, with extra fire engines and personnel called in to assist.
Dunbar said one of those had since been extinguished and crews had left the scene, while firefighters were finishing work at the other as of Monday at 1.30pm.
Crews were also being dispatched to another fire in a rural area off Maharakeke Rd about 1.30pm.
In a social media post, Fire and Emergency urged people to check old burn piles and previous burn sites, particularly in exposed areas, as the strong winds continue.
