Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of the aggressor state said that Moscow views increased NATO activity in the Arctic as a direct threat to its security. He wrote this in an article published by the Russian Foreign Ministry, France 24 reports.
Lavrov’s statement
According to Lavrov, Russia considers the Alliance’s military exercises in the Far North to be “aggressive.” He also claimed that such military activity increases the risks of incidents that could trigger an armed confrontation with potentially catastrophic consequences.
Arctic Sentry mission
In February, NATO launched the Arctic Sentry mission to strengthen its presence in the Far North. France 24 notes that this reflects the Alliance’s increased attention to the Arctic amid tensions with Moscow and US President Donald Trump’s desire to purchase Greenland.

Russia has a naval fleet in the Arctic, including nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear weapons, and is developing a sea route to connect with Asian countries. According to the outlet, Russia has the largest military presence and the most developed military infrastructure in the Arctic. In recent years, China has also been increasing its activity in the mineral-rich region, mainly in partnership with Moscow.
Norway strengthens its defense
Norway this month expanded a previously established military brigade headquartered in the Arctic. This was another step by the NATO member country to strengthen its defense presence after Russia launched its war against Ukraine in 2022. Moscow has previously rejected claims that it poses a threat to NATO.
