Sinn Fein taking a position on special criminal court to the right of both Labour and SocDems 🙄

  1. I guess they prefer the cudgel wielded from PBP accusing them of being too acquiescent to the existence of the SCC as opposed to the one wielded by FF/FG saying they are soft on crime or opposed to the SCC for selfish interests and political reasons.

Disarming that line of attack seems to be of more benefit to SF in their calculation.

I’m happy enough to see SF’s opposition to the SCC removed as it might finally allow a frank conversation, free from partisan hysteria, regarding the history and nature of, as well as the serious issues that exist from having an institution such as the SCC be a normalised institution in the country.

  2. Whatever SF’s position, one should be wary of a system which abrogrates one’s right to a trial by one’s peers.

The Diplock system was created to underpin an illegitimate system, and it wasn’t fit for the 20th century, let alone the the 21st
