Alessandro Di Battista, a writer,
activist and former top member of the anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S), is in a serious condition in a Havana hospital
after suffering severe head pain and passing out while on a
reporting trip to Cuba.
Di Battista, 48, regained consciousness Sunday and vowed to “get
back to Italy fighting fit”, but Italy has sent a medical team
from Rome’s prestigious Gemelli Hospital to assist in his case.
His 45-year-old partner Sahra Lahouasnia, a French-born Sorbonne
graduate and journalist, has also flown out to be with him.
The couple have two young children, Andrea and Filippo.
Di Battista, although he stepped down from the M5S a few years
ago under its ban on members serving more than two terms in
public office, is still a regular on Italian TV chat shows and
has been prominent in denouncing what many call an Israeli
genocide in Gaza, a claim Tel Aviv vehemently rejects.
