There are fewer pubs in England and Wales than ever before, according to analysis that sheds light on the ruinous impact of the coronavirus pandemic and soaring business costs.
The total number of pubs dropped below 40,000 during the first half of 2022, a fall of more than 7,000 compared with a decade ago.
Covid fucked the industry, but the decline was happening beforehand. Drive through deprived areas and you see loads of empty pubs.
It’s just so expensive to run, the rent, alcohol and sports licenses. Independent pub owners end up spending their entire lives grafting to make sure their business stays afloat. Plus you have to contend with national pub chains like Wetherspoons or Green King.
It’s just not a viable or sought after way of life anymore.
Good thing they got crown stamps on their pints now
Very sad indeed. I’ve had some great visits to England in my years and they all involved jovial conversations with pubgoers.
Truly the demise of an empire
Sad face
Grim.
A lot of the traditional pubs in Birmingham are now Chinese buffets or something. One near me suffered a suspicious fire and eventually got knocked down for housing.
I’m teetotal and I love pubs.
I hope they always exist because if they don’t people will drink at home.
The government really should stop cheap alcohol in supermarkets.
