Villagers, fighting Government plans to house hundreds of asylum seekers at the old RAF Linton base near York, have launched a new YouTube Channel.
Called Linton Action it will host videos of residents talking about the impact, they say, the plans will have.
The RAF’s former Linton-on-Ouse base is being considered by the Government as a site to accommodate up to 1,200 people seeking asylum.
The proposal has been met with objections from local residents, and the elected Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, Labour’s David Skaith, has said that “RAF Linton-on-Ouse is simply the wrong place for plans to accommodate large numbers of asylum seekers”.
Professor Olga Matthias is one of residents behind the channel: “The YouTube channel is just making our situation real because it is a tiny community that’s going to quadruple in size.
“There’s already major issues with the infrastructure, and on YouTube it’s easier for people to access.
“It’s easier for them to look at all the little clips.
“Basically, it’s a few people who want to talk about a particular subject getting together around a table and just having a discussion.”
According to the Home Office, potential use of the site is “subject to detailed feasibility assessments, which could take several months to complete”.
