The reaction in Serbia to the death of Ratko Mladic on August 27 has generated global dismay. The Bosnian Serb commander who was convicted in 2017 of genocide and other war crimes by an international tribunal for the slaughter of Bosniak Muslims in the early 1990s, ended his days in prison in The Hague. His beefy, sneering face would forever be associated with the range of repugnant acts in Bosnia that stunned the world – and me, a college student – in the early 1990s.
