Manchester City have signed German international defender Carlotta Wamser on a four-year contract. The English Women’s Super League champions on Monday confirmed the signing.

Wamser, 22, joins from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of €650,000 (roughly $750,000), which would be a Bundesliga record.

“The English league is the best league in the world and Manchester City are one of the best clubs in the world,” Wamser said in a statement on City’s website.

“I feel like I need the next step for my career and I feel that I can develop as a player here very well. And I like the challenge as well, so I think it’s the perfect step for me right now,” she added.

Wamser, who plays at right back and grew up in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, has 14 Germany caps and made her debut in the women’s Bundesliga in 2020, before even turning 17. She was a regular fixture in Germany’s youth teams before graduating to the seniors last year.

City’s director of football, Therese Sjögran, said that Wamser “is a player we’ve admired for some time and [we] know she will bring energy, passion and a willingness to learn to the team.”

Two German teammates await her in Manchester, Rebecca Knaak and Sydney Lohmann.

Wamser was not in Leverkusen’s squad for Sunday’s Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg, which had already prompted speculation that a transfer announcement was likely imminent.
