Hey guys,

we plan to climb Triglav in August. We already had an amazing week back in 2018 in Triglav National Park, but we did not do Triglav back then. We’re not really big climbers, more like hikers, but we thought to give it a try. We do not have a via ferrata gear, and we do not intend to get one, maybe helmets and gloves.

There are a lot of suggested routes, but not exactly the one that I’d prefer, so I mixed two popular routes sort of together. Do you think that this is feasible and safe? We’d really like to do the 7 lakes routes during the climb, so this is the 1st day: Stara Fuzina -> Jezerska Planina -> Dvojne Jezero -> Zeleno Jezero -> Sedlo Hrlbarice -> Sedlo Dolic -> Dom Planika

2nd day: Dom Planika -> Mali Triglav -> Triglav -> Mali Triglav -> Dom Planika -> Konjsko Sedlo -> Vodnikov Dom -> Stara Fuzina

I’m not looking forward that much to the Mali Triglav part, it seems a bit dangerous and exposed.

  1. Get the ferrata gear. Especially the kit that saves you from falling. It’s not only about wether you will need it ( likely you won’t), but the peak gets crowded, so you’ll have to pass the oncoming hikers a lot and the rocks are slippery due to the thousands of people going up every year. The belt and harness will make you feel safer. Also you will definitely need a helmet due to the danger of falling rocks and i advise you get some open finger gloves as well, the steel ropes get uncomfortable really quick.

Edit: i think you can rent the gear at some of hiking rental shops so you don’t need to buy it. Also i think it would be best if you have never used it before to at least watch some videos on its proper use – like clipping in – or pay for a quick course form a ferrata instructor to teach you the basics if you dont know them yet. I think most rental shops should be able to give you some advice on that too.

  2. Day 1 could be a bit long if you are not used to a lot of walking. Make sure to start early.

Via ferrata gear could make you feel more comfortable. Most people dont use it. Helmet is heavily advised.

  3. If you haven’t climb before I advise not to go. Czechs come in flip flops and too many die in mountains because of lack of proper gear

  4. Everything below Planika is child’s play, long but very easy hiking. As soon as you you leave the hut and go for the summit, it becomes significantly more technical!
Helmets are a must, absolutely not up for discussion! The route is steep and small rocks might be triggered by someone climbing above you. I’d say about 50% of people use the feratta kit, but those who don’t, already have some experience with similar technical ascents. If you consider yourself more of a hiker, get the kit! It’s annoying to use it, but most of the upper section of the mountain is so steep and exposed, that a single slip up will be your last.
