ZAGREB, 1 September 2026 – Zagreb residents will have the chance to discover lesser-known stories, historic figures and legends of the Croatian capital through a programme of 31 free themed walking tours taking place throughout September.
Organised by the Zagreb Tourist Board (TZGZ) as part of its “Get to Know Your City” project, the tours will run on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 27 September, with five different themes offered in Croatian.
The programme explores different aspects of Zagreb’s history and cultural heritage, including the city’s Upper Town, the influential Mažuranić family and one of Croatia’s best-known writers, August Šenoa.
The costumed tour “In the Shadow of Upper Town Facades” will reveal stories and anecdotes from Zagreb’s past, from earlier periods through to the arrival of modern times. It starts at 10:30am at the Stone Gate.
“Stories from Old Zagreb”, beginning at 4pm at Mažuranić Square, focuses on the prominent Mažuranić family and its links to the city.
A new tour titled “Zagreb’s Son” marks the 145th anniversary of Šenoa’s death and follows locations connected with the celebrated Croatian writer and his relationship with Zagreb. It starts at 5pm near the Zagreb city model on Bakačeva Street.

Two tours have been specially designed for children aged 6 to 11 and their families.
“Zagorka’s Key to Secrets” brings writer and journalist Marija Jurić Zagorka to life through an interactive tour featuring stories and legends. It takes place on Saturdays at 5pm, except 5 September.
Meanwhile, “Zagreb Carousel” combines costumed guides, stories, games and puzzles to introduce children to the city’s landmarks and history. It runs on Sundays at 10:30am.
TZGZ director Martina Bienenfeld said the programme was designed to help residents discover stories and places that contribute to Zagreb’s identity.
All tours are free of charge, but advance registration and reservations are required. Participants should provide their name and the number of people attending when registering by SMS or WhatsApp.
