It is forever a mystery why anyone from the Democrats or in the press demonizes the money in politics. Trying to sell the conceit that people on the left are not lured by cash is a laughable myth. Chris Hayes ensnared himself in this very type of discussion.

Sure, it is fashionable to say the Republicans are a party beholden to money and wealth, but you need to ignore and excuse so much to sell that trope. Pretending Democrats are not just as transfixed by dollar signs is desperate projection; just look at Kamala Harris banking $1.5 billion for her truncated presidential bid to see that is pure folly.

So why, one could ask, would Chris Hayes dare to wade into that dark water about dark money to slam one side? He decided it was a needed dose of commentary from him to lash out at Elon Musk spending in a profligate fashion for political purposes.

Hayes was clearly bothered that Musk would be making political investments (“unfathomable amounts of money”, as he described it), while he needed to chide the man for improper spending. “Not, by the way, to give to charity,” – pause to make a smug expression – “…not to save people’s lives across the global south.”

Here, once again, we have a journalist becoming ensnared by their partisan approach and deciding to forego basic research. Hayes needed to pretend the world’s wealthiest man does not donate money, in order to impugn his desire to support political causes and figures.

The Musk Foundation hands out hundreds of millions each year. Of course, some say he is not giving enough, or doing it wrong. But to suggest, as Chris Hayes has done, that he is not doing any philanthropic work sees the facts begging.

Then Hayes gets caught in reality. He runs into another billionaire and his nepo baby, specifically George Soros and his offspring, Alex Soros. George has been involved in turning a firehose of cash on various political causes and grants. He is well known, for a lot longer time, for steering influence through a variety of organizations to back his pet causes.

That those causes and candidates are almost exclusively on the Left is well known. As his son has risen to prominence in recent years, there has been a breadline of Democrats who have giddily posed with the Soros progeny.

So, how does Chris Hayes address this conflict of money interest? By basically dismissing the billionaire residing in his tribe.

Okay, sure – that billionaire has been at it for decades, but he doesn’t really count, does he?!

What is the root of this outrage at opulent spending is the financial condition of the Democratic Party. The outfit has been running dry of late and donations have not been rolling in, so the party had to recently take out a bridge loan with some property held as collateral. They are also still on the hook for the debt that Kamala left them with after the election. ($1.5 billion was hardly enough for a losing venture, you see.)

Then there has been the spigot being choked off at ActBlue. That funding outfit has been accused of taking in foreign donations and other financial chicanery. The organization at one stage even hired lobbyists to sway against reform measures on The Hill

A result of all of this has been funding not being as flush for election hopefuls. As Democrats struggle, the demonization of Republican donors is a result. According to Chris Hayes, it is unseemly that the party can keep its finances in order.
