MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – University of Wisconsin-Whitewater said Wednesday there is no threat to life after an emergency alert was sent out earlier in the day.
A campus safety alert posted just after 11 a.m. said the campus community was asked to shelter in place unless told otherwise.
UW-Whitewater said around 11:37 a.m. that police confirmed there was no threat to safety when the alert system was activated.
UW-Whitewater Chancellor Corey King and Police Chief Matthew Kiederlen said someone reported a person walked into Andersen Hall and was yelling. People believed the person had a weapon.

The individual then left the hall, officials explained.
UW-Whitewater said police found the person later and determined the person did not have a weapon. There was no threat to campus safety.
UW-Whitewater Police Department and Walworth County Sheriff’s Office squad cars were seen outside Andersen Library, according to a student on campus.

UW-Whitewater is open and operational, including classes and activities.
UW-Whitewater’s first day of classes started on Wednesday.
Officials thanked those who responded to the incident Wednesday.
“While we are relieved there was no active threat, we understand how deeply upsetting these situations can be for our university community, especially on the first day of classes,” King and Kiederlen said.
UW-Whitewater linked urgent care resources available and its Employee Assistance Program for those who need help. Counseling services are also available for those who need support.
The Rock County campus was not affected.
