(TNS) — A data breach at Bennett College has affected at least 30,065 individuals, including at least 10,875 in North Carolina.

The Greensboro college issued a news release that said the data breach occurred Oct. 27 through Nov. 15 when “certain information stored on our network was subject to unauthorized access for a limited period of time.”

Bennett officials referred to the news release when asked by the News & Record for more details on the data breach.

The college did not say in the news release which individuals were affected, whether students, faculty, staff or others.

Bennett filed a data breach notification with the N.C. Attorney General Office that was received Friday. That filing listed the number of individuals affected.

Following an investigation into the data breach, Bennett said affected information “likely varies by individual but may include:” name; Social Security number; driver’s license/state identification number; date of birth; U.S. alien registration number; financial account information; taxpayer identification number; passport number; digital signature; medical information; and/or health insurance information.

Two websites that monitor ransomware activity — DeXpose and Galaxy Warden — reported that Bennett.edu was listed Dec. 6 on an Incransom’s leak site.

“Upon discovery, we immediately took action to address and investigate the event, which included contacting law enforcement and engaging third-party computer forensic specialists to assist with determining the nature and scope of the event,” the college said. “We immediately took steps to secure our systems and enhance the security of our network.”

Bennett said it is providing potentially affected individuals with access to credit monitoring and identity protection services. Those affected can call 866-899-7220 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

“We encourage potentially impacted individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing credit reports/account statements and explanation of benefits forms for suspicious activity and to detect errors,” the college said.

Since the start of 2025, there also have been data breaches affecting the Triad involving Preferred Parking Service, Atrium Health, Belk’s, Food Lion, Greensboro immigration law firm of Chapman & Roberts PA, Krispy Kreme Inc., and Triad Radiology Associates.
