Long-delayed Dublin Metrolink to cost €9.5bn with first trains running by 2034

  1. Any word on the green line Luas south of Charlemont being upgraded or have the NIMBYs killed that one? A direct, frequent transport link from Bride’s Glen directly to the airport would be amazing.

  2. Ahh just get it done already before its gonna cost so much we won’t be able to afford it anymore and that will be it, wouldn’t be surprised at all…

  3. I’m struggling to think of the last time we built infrastructure and thought, “you know, that was not money well spent”.

I’d hope we will do this properly though – overcome the NIMBYism around Ranelagh and upgrade the Green line to support the large developments which are proposed along it.

We also need very visible policing on an underground. None of whatever it is we have now, we’re not spending 10 billion to give thugs a joyride to the airport.

  4. If they start digging, they’re just going to run into some trash heap left by the bloody Scandinavians and the whole thing will be held up for years

  5. Buses are fine if you acknowledge that city Centre roads are too small for cars and have the balls to reserve roads for buses where bus routes are.

  6. This was estimated at roughly €2bn back when it was Metro North in 2010. Metrolink is not the exact same route, but very similar. Had it been approved, it would be opened by now, contributing to the economy, and paying for itself.

Delaying these projects by a couple of years is ok, but delaying for 10+ years is a colossal waste of money. For reference, €9bn is ~40% of the final cost of London’s Crossrail project, which is on a whole other scale to the Metrolink underground tram connecting Swords and the airport to the city center.

  7. Hopefully it’s standard gauge and not our own domestic gauge used by no other country on earth

Like honestly, who thought a broader gauge was a good idea, now anytime we buy trains they either have to be built to this gauge or converted over

  8. Lads the “luas is free” gag is all fun and games but can we stop pretending the Metrolink is ever going to be a thing? That joke’s not funny any more
