Hyundai Mobis is starting operations at a new plant in Slovakia, its third production base for electrified components in Europe.
Hyundai Mobis (012330) said on the 3rd that it held a ceremony marking the start of operations at its new PE System plant in Slovakia on the 2nd. A PE System is an electrified drive unit that integrates an electric motor, an inverter and a reducer.
The plant, located in Novaky in Slovakia’s Trencin region, is the third electrified production base Hyundai Mobis has built in Europe, following facilities in the Czech Republic and Spain, and its first PE System plant. The company produces battery system assemblies (BSA) in the Czech Republic and Spain. Investment in the Slovakia plant totaled about 250 billion won.
The plant was built on a site of about 106,000 square meters — roughly the size of 15 soccer fields — with a total floor area of 8,500 square meters. It can produce 280,000 PE Systems a year, including production lines for stators and inverters, key components of electric motors. Each electric vehicle is fitted with one PE System.
The Novaky plant will serve as an integrated base capable of supplying core electrified components to outside customers as well as to Hyundai Motor (005380) and Kia (000270). Hyundai Mobis has secured in-house core technology and mass-production capability across electric vehicle components, including BSA and PE Systems.
Hyundai Mobis has been working to secure strategic bases and a foothold in Europe, focusing on the growth potential of the region’s electric vehicle market, the world’s second largest after China. The aim is to strengthen its competitiveness in winning orders from global automakers as well as from Hyundai Motor and Kia. Slovakia, where the new plant is located, hosts factories operated by Volkswagen, Stellantis and Volvo.
“To achieve our future vision, we will make further investments and efforts to establish the Novaky PE System plant as a core electrification base in Europe,” Hyundai Mobis President Lee Kyu-seok said. “Going forward, strategic models from global automakers equipped with Hyundai Mobis PE Systems will lead the European electrification market.”
