A Newington man wanted on child sexual abuse charges was extradited back to Connecticut on Wednesday after reportedly fleeing to Canada in 2023.
Scott Hunter Scharr, 24, faces two counts each of criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor and a single count each of commercial sex abuse of a minor, promoting a minor in an obscene performance and first-degree illegal possession of child sex abuse material, according to Lt. Scott Amalfi of the Newington Police Department.
Amalfi said police began investigating in January 2023 after receiving information suggesting a minor was possibly sexually assaulted by a Newington man, who was also believed by authorities to be in possession of child sexual abuse materials. Police obtained two warrants for Scharr’s arrest following a “thorough investigation,” Amalfi said.
During the investigation, Amalfi said police learned that Scharr had fled to Canada and was allegedly living under the name “Hunter Scott”. After years of collaboration with federal authorities and law enforcement in Canada, Amalfi said Scharr was taken into custody in December 2025.
Scharr was extradited back to Connecticut with assistance from the New Britain State’s Attorney’s Office, the United States Marshal’s Service and the Port Authority New York/New Jersey Police Department.
Scharr was held on a $1 million bond and was scheduled to face a judge on Thursday in New Britain Superior Court.
