A drone found on Tuesday in the Pellinki archipelago near the Finnish city of Porvoo is Russian, according to preliminary investigation results. Two official sources told YLE News this. The investigation is ongoing, so there are no final conclusions about the device yet.
Possible territorial violation being investigated
Finland’s Ministry of Defence previously stated that the find is being investigated as a possible violation of the country’s territory. The Finnish Border Guard and police are conducting the investigation.
The drone was found on the rocky shore of an island in the Pellinki archipelago. It has not yet been established how it got there. Possible versions include the device deviating from its route or falling into the sea, after which it could have drifted to the coast.

There were no explosives on board
The device was likely intended for mapping or filming. The Finnish Border Guard reported that the drone contained no explosive substances and was several meters in size.
The service is also establishing the drone’s origin, its possible flight or drift route, and the circumstances in which it reached the coast near Porvoo.
