Engineers in the Netherlands took fine mud choking a lifeless lake and used it to build five low islands and within a few years, rare birds started showing up. In the summer of 2020, one of them nested and hatched a chick: a gull-billed tern, a slim, pale, marsh-edge bird that had all but vanished from Dutch breeding records for more than sixty years. According to Natuurmonumenten, only one breeding case had been known in the country since 1958. The lone exception was a nest found near Den Helder in 2005, and its eggs most likely never hatched.
We are not ornithologists or ecologists, and nothing here is advice. This is our reading of one conservation project and the research around it, drawn from the organisations running it and from the wider literature on engineered habitat. A single nesting attempt is a data point, not a settled result, and we’ve tried to write it that way.
The contrast worth looking at is not really bird versus bird. It’s place versus place: the murky lake the Netherlands had been left with, and the five islands engineers dredged up out of it.
The lake that turned into a bathtub
Lake Markermeer sits in the central Netherlands, one of the larger freshwater lakes in western Europe. It has a hard, artificial history. It and neighbouring Lake IJsselmeer were once part of the Zuiderzee, a North Sea inlet that was dammed off from the sea in 1932. The Markermeer was then walled off from the IJsselmeer in 1976 by a dam.
The result was a shallow lake, only a few metres deep, ringed by dikes with almost no natural, gently sloping shores. A thick layer of fine silt settled on the bottom. Wind and waves keep stirring that light silt back up into the water, so the lake stays cloudy. Cloudy water blocks light, which suppresses the algae and water plants at the base of the food chain, which in turn starves fish and birds. The decline showed in the counts. Some water birds, including common pochard and tufted duck, fell by more than 75% since the 1980s.
A big lake, in other words, that behaved a bit like a bathtub someone had stirred and then walled in. Plenty of water, very little life.
Building islands out of the lakebed
The fix was to take the problem material and make land from it. Starting in 2016, the dredging contractor Boskalis, working with Natuurmonumenten and the Dutch water agency Rijkswaterstaat, pulled roughly 30 million cubic metres of silt, clay, peat and sand off the lake floor. Rather than dump it, they shaped it into five low islands.
What the engineers were building was not scenery. It was the missing ingredient: soft, marshy edges and sheltered shallows, the kind of in-between zone the diked lake had never had. Muddy margins where wading birds can feed, and low bare ground where ground-nesting birds can lay eggs away from predators and people.
The early signs went beyond one rare tern. By 2021, the islands had recorded 47 breeding bird species, and in the year to that summer around 60,000 migratory birds used them to feed and rest.
The chick that hatched, and the ones that didn’t
In early June 2020, the ecologist Jan van der Winden and colleagues found a gull-billed tern nesting on one of the closed islands, and a chick soon hatched. For a bird effectively absent from Dutch breeding records for six decades, that was a genuine event. Ranger Tim Kreetz put it plainly to the Dutch broadcaster NOS: “Dit hebben we sinds 1958 niet meer in Nederland meegemaakt” — we haven’t seen this in the Netherlands since 1958.
Kreetz read it as a verdict on the habitat itself. In his words, “Het geeft aan dat de natuureilanden in het Markermeer ook voor deze zeldzame en kwetsbare vogel een geschikt leefgebied is” — a sign that the islands are suitable habitat even for this rare and vulnerable bird.
What one chick does and doesn’t prove
The tidy version of this story goes: dredge a dead lake, build islands, get rare birds back. We’d resist it, though. The chick is real, and it does show that the islands can attract a species Dutch marshes had lost. A bird looking for somewhere to nest chose engineered ground over everywhere else on offer. That matters.
But attracting a nester and sustaining a population are different things, and the gull-billed tern is a useful case for seeing the gap. A study of gull-billed terns in man-made saltpans on China’s Bohai Bay found that nests there actually did better than in many natural sites, helped by low disturbance and few predators. But the same study found that their success fell year on year as the habitat degraded, with rising water and flooding wiping out nests. Engineered habitat can be very good and quite fragile, sometimes in the same place.
That is the reading we keep coming back to. One hatched chick tells you a built landscape can pass the first test, that a picky bird will accept it. It doesn’t tell you whether the ground stays suitable across wet years and dry years, storm seasons and predator arrivals, or how much upkeep that takes. A single breeding attempt is a beginning that could go either way.
