While artificial intelligence remains controversial for many, its potential to help those in the loss prevention field has already been identified.
During a recent webinar, From Hours to Answers: AI for Faster Shrink Investigations, loss prevention leaders discussed how AI could be a real help when it comes to investigations. Specifically, the topics of generative AI, or AI that translates data into searchable language, was explored in comparison to agentic AI, or artificial intelligence that can act on what it detects without human instruction.
“The jump from generative to agentic is you’re no longer saying ‘find me;’ it’s just going out and finding on its own, acting as your agent based on what you’ve taught it and what it continues to learn,” said James Stark, strategic innovation leader at Wachter, Inc. “Now, we have to transition from ‘crawl, walk run.’ We’re learning to walk right now. We’re still a little wobbly.”
Casey Jarman, global LP physical security technology manager, said that when it comes to loss prevention, AI would “absolutely change the game.”
“I think AI and agentic AI are going to give you the ability to not only take those top-level cases and the reports that you already know very quickly—probably much more quickly than we’ve seen—but it’s going to finally give you the manpower, and people are going to be able to get into some of the things that we’ve historically not even known are happening.”
Cathy Langley, senior leader for asset protection and major accounts at Solink, agreed with Jarman, saying AI would allow LP professionals to do more in the field.
“I think that one of the things we’re going to uncover as we all move forward in this journey is those issues that we didn’t even know about,” Langley said.
