History was made on Tuesday, when Spyros Chrysikopoulos became the first man to swim from Greece to Italy.
A Greek open water swimmer, Chrysikopoulos completed the nearly 57-mile journey in 31 hours and 50 minutes, according to his Facebook fan page.
Chrysikopoulos began his swim on the Greek island of Othonoi, which is the westernmost point of Greece, on Monday.
On Tuesday, he finished the trek when he reached the shore of Santa Maria di Leuca on the southern tip of Italy, doing so on no sleep while under the surveillance of two judges from a distance, according to the Greek Reporter.
The historic journey from Greece to Italy wasn’t the only time that Chrysikopoulos has made headlines for lengthy swims.
In 2021, Chrysikopoulos broke a Guinness World Record for swimming 358.2 kilometers (222.6 miles) in seven days.
Chrysikopoulos then set another Guinness World Record in 2025, swimming 151 kilometers (94 miles) in a 50-meter pool over a span of 48 hours, doing so without stopping or any sleep.
