The 49ers have arrived in Melbourne ahead of an historic NFL game against the Los Angeles Rams next week, with Australian media having some fun with the Americans’ first impressions of life Down Under.

San Francisco’s roughly 200-person Niners traveling party landed Friday morning after a 15-hour charter flight, giving the team nearly a week to adjust before facing the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 11, as KPIX reports. The Rams are reportedly taking the opposite approach, arriving only about 24 hours before kickoff to stay closer to the West Coast time zone.

According to News.com.au, Americans’ reactions have already provided plenty of entertainment for Australians. When 49ers player Jordan Watkins posted a photo showing train tracks near his hotel, one American fan joked that he had been forced to stay next to another electrical substation, a reference to the long-running 49ers fan conspiracy theory blaming the PG&E substation near Levi’s Stadium for the team’s many injuries. The Australian media largely missed the inside joke, but found the whole substation observation amusingly bizarre.

Australian sports reporter Vince Rugari joked that US reporters arriving in the country were acting as though they had “landed on Mars,” while also warning that the visiting 49ers were about to encounter plenty of Sherrins, the Australian footballs used in the country’s other version of football, per News.com.au.

The 49ers players have also reportedly given the Australians plenty of material. Channel 7 journalist Andrew McCormack reported that the team brought 13 pallets of bottled water from Hawaii and its own chef to handle meals for the players and staff.

ESPN reports that the unusual trip has required months of preparation, with the NFL and 49ers moving roughly 59 tons of equipment and the entire football operation to Melbourne, where winter is just ending. The planning included Australia’s strict biosecurity requirements, with the team taking precautions to keep California dirt and grass out of the country.

The September 11 matchup will reportedly be the first regular-season NFL game played on Australian soil, following an exhibition game between the Broncos and Chargers that happened there in 1999.

Per ESPN, both the 49ers and the Rams will fly home to California directly after the game.
