He earned the nickname Cranberry Picker because on this day this berry was gathered and prepared for winter. The Feast of the Dormition is also celebrated. It is believed that after Luppus’ day, one should expect night frosts.

**What is remembered in the Church on September 5, 2026**

Luppus lived in the late III – early IV century in the Greek city of Thessalonica. He was a faithful servant for many years and, one could say, a friend and disciple of Demetrius of Thessalonica. He witnessed his martyrdom. He buried his lord, taking his bloody tunic and the imperial ring, also stained with the blood of Demetrius, for himself. The power of these relics helped Luppus perform a great number of miracles, leading many people to Christianity and strengthening even more in faith.

Luppus was not baptized, although he had professed Christianity for many years. When he broke the idols at a pagan shrine, he was captured and brought before the judges. They ordered him to be tortured, demanding that he renounce Christianity. Luppus, however, only fervently prayed, asking the Lord for the sacrament of baptism to be performed upon him before he died. And then a miracle occurred — a rain cloud gathered over the saint in a completely clear sky, and water poured down. Thus, everyone understood that the Holy Spirit had descended upon him. Overjoyed, Luppus continued to endure the tortures steadfastly. After which, he was beheaded.

**The meaning of the holiday**
