“If we’re looking at the best places to be for Father’s Day, the likes of Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne are probably the places to be,” MetService meteorologist Gareth Roderick said.
Napier’s forecast high of 21C tomorrow was 5C above the average temperature for this time of year, he said.
But with the weather front coming off the Tasman Sea, Father’s Day would be different on the west side of the country, he said.
From about Raglan down to Taranaki and then the South Island, most of the west could expect rain tomorrow.
MetService’s heavy rain warning applied to the South Island’s Grey and Buller Districts.
Peak rainfalls could hit 15-20mm per hour in West Coast regions, MetService said, with the warning in force from 6am tomorrow until early Monday morning.
With snow also in the ranges and temperatures dropping in Christchurch and across Canterbury, Roderick suggested South Island dads might want to look indoors.
“Maybe an indoor day at a cosy cafe in the South Island for Father’s Day,” he said.
Across the country
For Aucklanders, the rains can wait as today’s mild weather presents a chance to get outside.
The city is enjoying a mostly sunny high of 17C today.
Father’s Day will hit a high of 18C in the city as cloud starts to gather by late morning and scattered showers develop in the evening.
In the north, Whangārei is expected to be mainly fine with a high of 18C and a chance of an afternoon shower, before hitting a top of 20C tomorrow, according to MetService.
Tauranga is set for a fine high of 19C today before an odd shower for dad’s day tomorrow and a top of 18C.
Hamilton is also mostly fine with a high of 17C, before a chilly overnight low of 6C and then evening showers and an expected top of 17C again.
Napier and the East Coast are set for a sunny 20C today and top of 21C tomorrow with cloudy conditions but no rain forecast.
In the west of the North Island, New Plymouth is mostly fine today but with a chance of showers in the evening and a chilly top of 15C. Rain is then expected on Father’s Day.
The capital city is set for a top of 15C today before the clouds increase and morning showers turn to rain in the evening with a high of 15C on Sunday.
Christchurch’s top of 18C today will give way to a sharp temperature drop as it hits a maximum 12C tomorrow and morning rain getting heavy at times in the afternoon.
