Anyone knows what’s happening in the Sihl River in Zurich? What is that muddy dirty water?

  1. If it rains the sihl is stirred up in places from sihlsee to leimbach approx then it turns that muddy

  2. If it rains, the water level rises and washes out more sediment. It’s pretty normal for rivers to get murky after a storm or heavy rainfall. It has nothing to do with water quality. In fact, the water of the Sihl is being labelled as good (until it reaches Zurich).

  3. Huh funny, since i’m about to head there right now.

BTW anyone else get those crazy thunderbolts in your yards? Woke up at 4 am because of some rather close shooting lightning

  4. Just read the news, seriously. You see pictures of heavy rainfall everywhere, look at how dirty the “Emme wave” was yesterday. That’s just what happens after a lot of rainfall.

  5. After a storm event (>2.5mm rainfall in 24 hr), turbidity (silt/dust suspended in water) can be expected to increase. This can occur naturally, but can also be exacerbated by poor erosion and sediment control on human projects (e.g. construction sites) in which ground cover protecting the stability of the soil has been disturbed or removed. Ground cover can include grass, brush, trees, etc. In many cases, turbidity can look a little worse than it is. I don’t know if Switzerland has a water quality sampling program, but I would guess there is some one out there whose job is to monitor the conditions and make sure that the water is safe for the fish and wildlife.

  6. Big Construction in Gattikon since beg of the year, but more activities recently, in order to build a tunnel to the lake to avoid flooding in HB and the city. I live there.

  7. If that suprises you, you should go to the Aare underneath Solothurn after a rainstorm. It becomes a brown soup.
