A second consecutive monthly decline points to changing migration choices, with another Central European country attracting increasing attention.

Some Ukrainians with temporary protection status continue to leave Poland. At the same time, the Czech Republic is becoming an increasingly popular destination for those seeking to relocate.

According to Eurostat, the number of Ukrainian citizens benefiting from temporary protection in Poland fell by 8,110 in July, to 953,100. A decline was also recorded a month earlier, with the figure dropping by 6,300 in June.

Germany Remains the Main Destination

Germany hosts the largest number of Ukrainians with temporary protection. In June, their number approached 1.29 million.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian refugees who decide to leave Poland are increasingly choosing the Czech Republic. At the end of June, around 381,000 people there were covered by the temporary protection scheme.

How Many Ukrainians Other European Countries Have Taken In

Several other European Union countries also recorded high figures in July.

In Spain, 272,300 people were benefiting from temporary protection.

In Romania, 219,400 people held the corresponding status.

In Slovakia, the number of temporary protection beneficiaries stood at 149,000.

The European Union introduced the temporary protection scheme following the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine in February 2022. It gives Ukrainians the right to reside legally and access employment, education, healthcare, and social support in EU countries.

Ukrainians Account for the Overwhelming Majority

Ukrainian citizens remain the largest group among all people benefiting from temporary protection in the European Union. In June, more than 24,000 Ukrainians applied for this status.

Ukrainian citizens accounted for 98.5 percent of all people covered by temporary protection. The data also show that Poland remains one of the main destinations for Ukrainians in Europe. However, their gradually declining numbers there are accompanied by the growing importance of other destinations, particularly the Czech Republic.
