ZAGREB, 5 September 2026 – Luka Modrić will remain available for the Croatia national football team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign, continuing one of the most remarkable international careers in Croatian football.
The Croatia captain has confirmed his decision to national team head coach Slaven Bilić and Croatian Football Federation (HNS) president Marijan Kustić, HNS said on Saturday.
Modrić, who has made 202 appearances for Croatia, will therefore continue his international career as the Vatreni prepare for a demanding series of Nations League fixtures.
The 40-year-old midfielder has been a central figure in the most successful period in the history of Croatian football, captaining the national team through a number of major international tournaments.

Bilić welcomed Modrić’s decision, saying the midfielder’s importance to Croatia extends beyond his performances on the pitch.
“Of course, I am extremely pleased with Luka’s decision because we all know what he represents and means for Croatia both on and off the pitch,” Bilić said.
He added that he was particularly pleased to be working with Modrić again after 14 years, with both sharing the ambition of seeing Croatia remain competitive at the highest level.
The decision means Modrić will be available for a demanding run of Nations League matches in the autumn.
Bilić is due to announce his squad on Monday ahead of the September gathering, with Croatia scheduled to face Czechia in Prague on 26 September and Spain in Seville on 29 September.
The schedule continues in October, with Croatia facing England in Rijeka on 3 October, before meeting Spain again in Split on 6 October.
