Oslo’s electric-car boom has pushed the EV conversation beyond hype and into something much more practical. That is, the logistics of charging all the EVs that make up a remarkable 50% of the city’s cars.
In a new video, creator Out of Spec Roaming (@OutofSpecRoaming) shows how Oslo supplies power for so many EVs without straining the system.
Here’s what to know
The video shows the multiple levers the city uses to ensure everyone has access to charging, even if they can’t charge at home for whatever reason.
First are the 2,500 municipal parking spots, per Out of Spec Roaming. These support slow charging. Drivers can bring their own cable and plug in using any number of apps.
Interestingly, the creator finds that the economics make it actually cheaper to park and charge in these spots than in a regular old charge-free spot. That’s a great deal for EV drivers.
Next up are fast chargers, which are abundant across the city and have time limits to ensure people don’t overstay their welcome.
Lastly are a number of fueling stations outside the city, which Out of Spec Roaming shows can power everything from box trucks to vans.
At Oslo’s level of adoption, charging has to work at scale, every day, across neighborhoods and daily routines.
And the story is still moving. The video notes that fully electric cars continue to make up a larger share of Oslo’s passenger fleet, so whatever works now will need to keep expanding as more residents leave gas-powered vehicles behind.
