Scottish police officers set to take action in pay dispute

  1. Just remember, the entire UK public sector (5.5 million people) could take a 5000 pay rise and it would cost 27 billion.

Thats not including the fact at least 50% will probably make its way back to the government via taxation, into the economy, and the 27 billion extra is about 0.7% of our GDP.

  2. I’d be interested to see how succesful this is. If it works, I can see police forces across the country adopting this method of industrial action, as its pretty much the most severe thing police can do within the bounds of the law.

Policing in the UK runs on goodwill. If I am due to start at 1400, I need to be in work at least 30 minutes before that to get my kit on, sort out a car, book out equipment and such, because from 1400, I need to be ready to respond to 999 calls. At the end of a shift, if I work 15-30 minutes beyond when I’m due to finish, my supervisors will do anything from encourage me to outright ordering me not to claim the overtime. On top of this, lots of cops do work in their free time. This is anything from just checking emails, to outright progressing their investigations from home, just to keep on top of the workload.

If goodwill goes away, then the efectivness of the police service goes through the floor. If the general public think the service is bad now, I think they’d be shocked by how bad it would get it everyone was strict about only working during the hours they are paid to work.
