  1. Finland is the most metal country in the world. However, I think Norway takes the black metal crown. Finnish melodic death is, imo, superior to Swedish, but I enjoy the keyboards, lot of people don’t.

  2. I would say norway is the number one black metal country but the black metal scene and whole metal scene overall is very well breathing in every northern country

  3. Best (or second best) in the world. You’ve got everything from solid local up-and-comers to world famous bands in a variety of metal subgenres. Lots of fellow fans to kibitz with too.

  4. You want suggestions?

Some bands I’ve found to be enjoyable after moving here are Horna, Vorna, Havukruunu and …and Oceans, though they moved into different genres with their later works. Depending on who you ask, Moonsorrow also counts. I won’t get into genre discussions, but Encyclopaedia Metallum lists them under Black Metal.

Generally I don’t know if there is a larger percentage of Black Metal listeners in Finland compared to other countries. But there are a *lot* of Metal fans and as a result, the Black Metal scene is healthy as well, as it is a niche of the overall Metal sphere. You can definitely meet a number of… interesting characters.

  5. Not a huge BM fan myself, but always down for Dimmu Borgir and Emperor.

As for the metal scene in Finland – yes.

  6. Melodic death metal is the traditional number one metal genre in Finland. There’s a decent amount of black metal too, especially in the recent years the 3rd wave has been picking up in Finland.

The ever-helpful Metal Archives tells us that there have been 1408 black metal acts in Finland, of which 814 are reportedly active.

Some of the more prominent contemporary ones are Paara, Havukruunu, Vorna, Mimorium, Marrasmieli and Oranssi Pazuzu.

  7. Black metal is only one subgenre of the whole metal scene, while metal scene is huge in finland and there are many who enjoy black metal, black metal purists are rare.

  8. Beherit Fuck yeah! Cult is very mutch alive in finland and doing well. And I love how the early 90 old bands are getting active again.

  9. On a little side note: That shirt is a shirt of my father’s band. They played thrash metal.

Ps. They’re not nazis, they had to change their name twice to make sure people didn’t think so.

  10. I listen to metal, including black metal. Metal is normalized in Finland, Tuska had 49 000 people attending this year. It’s not uncommon to hear metal music at parties and clubs. Lots of people wear jean vests with band patches etc.

  11. If you are interested in black metal scene in Finland, you should check Steelfest and Steelchaos festivals in Hyvinkää.

  12. When speaking of the larger audiences Black metal is probably not that popular, it is a niche within metal fans. But definately it is more popular here than in other places.

  13. I have weird relationship with it. I *really* love the style but there is very few albums that have clicked on me. As for the metal scene, it pretty rampant and even the radio stations known for softer music will regularly play some native classics.

  14. Beherit, Goatmoon, Satanic Warmaster, White Wolves Kommando, Azazel, Fatherland, Clandestine Blaze, ecc… Finnish Black Metal is the best 🤘🏻🇫🇮

  15. You young people with your genres. We just had heavy rock. Then came the “big divide”: hard rock and heavy metal. Nowadays figuring out the right genre feels like solving a puzzle.
