Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev in Sofia to advance bilateral energy security initiatives, the Slovak government announced.
One of the main outcomes of the summit was a strategic agreement between Slovakia and Bulgaria to cooperate on the construction of new nuclear reactors. Both nations plan to deploy reactor technology from the United States, with US vendor Westinghouse positioned as the primary partner for their respective expansion plans. Fico also urged the Slovak Ministry of Economy to capitalise on Bulgarian gas import routes into Central Europe as alternative supply options gain importance. He reaffirmed his government’s firm opposition to the REPowerEU initiative, which mandates the phase-out of Russian natural gas imports by late 2027.
“Gas will present an enormous problem,” stated the Slovak Prime Minister. “We will purchase it at prices unprecedented in our lives. This outcome stems from EU energy policy realities.”
