Obesity rate in Cyprus at 15.5% in 2025, according to Eurostat

The share of people aged 18 and over in Cyprus who were obese reached 15.5% in 2025, up from 13.8% in 2022, according to data published by Eurostat on Friday.

At the same time, 36.4% of the adult population in Cyprus was pre-obese in 2025, meaning they had a body mass index between 25 and 30, compared with 34.6% in 2022.

Overall, based on the two rates, more than half of adults in Cyprus fell into the obese or pre-obese categories in 2025.

A significant difference was recorded between men and women in Cyprus, as 18.5% of men were obese in 2025, compared with 12.7% of women.

At EU level, 16.3% of people aged 18 and over were obese in 2025, meaning they had a body mass index of 30 or higher. In addition, 35.4% were pre-obese, with a body mass index between 25 and 30.

Among EU Member States, the highest obesity rate was recorded in Malta, where it reached 26.6%. Latvia followed at 24.6% and Finland at 23.2%. The lowest rates were recorded in Italy at 7.0%, Greece at 12.8% and Romania at 12.9%.
