In Finland, former President Tarja Halonen criticized the government’s cuts to STEA grants for social and health care organizations. YLE News reported on her social media statement.
A threat to organizations
According to Halonen, the cuts could severely weaken Finland’s civil society organization sector. She cited Kehitysvammaliitto and Selkokeskus as examples: due to reduced funding, their operations could almost completely cease.

Unusual criticism
Yle notes that Halonen’s criticism of domestic policy is unusual: former presidents of Finland rarely comment on domestic political issues. In the 1980s, Halonen also served as minister of social affairs and health.
