In short:
Welsh: Very strong in Wales, the welsh have a strong cultural tie to their language and greatly encourage its use throughout the country.
Irish: People are shy to speak the language, but there is a cultural tie to it that dates back to the foundation of the republic, and attitudes towards the language have only gotten better with time.
Scots Gaelic: Much weaker than Irish, people seem somewhat ashamed of their language, and do not consider it worthy to discuss matters such politics and world issues.
Its a very good watch, Seán Ó Riain is evidently a man who is very passionate about the Celtic language family. He does burst into song a few time but its a good laugh hahaha.
I was inspired to post this after I saw a few posts on the Welsh reddit talking about the language with the “Culture” tag; because of this I was going to also tag this post with the “Culture” tag, only to find out that Ireland’s subreddit **has no such thing.**
Maybe the fact that such a tag that is ever present in other country’s subreddit yet absent in our own, is a sign that we should begin to pay more attention to these matters.
One thing about the Irish language is that schools force students to learn it. There are many people who want to learn Irish but there are many who don’t. If you made Irish an optional language at school it would help to keep the language alive, as having it as a language that you have to learn makes many dislike the language because they were forced to learn it.
It’s good to see John Waters (no, not that one) branching out into academia.
