At the ABA League’s 25th anniversary ceremony, Sasa Doncic reflected on the league’s rising quality and financial expansion. As sports director of Ilirija, he stressed the club’s focus on youth player development. He also addressed the Los Angeles Lakers’ summer mini-camp held in Slovenia.
The ABA League celebrated its 25th anniversary, and Sasa Doncic, father of Luka Doncic was also present at the ceremony in Ljubljana.
Luka Doncic’s father and sports director of Ilirija was one of the guests at the event. In an interview with Mozzart Sport, he briefly commented on the ceremony:
“I think this really suits the quality of the ABA League over the past 25 years and honestly, the ceremony was done at the highest level and my congratulations to everyone, especially those who have been in the ABA League since day one,” Doncic emphasized.
Evolution of the ABA League & family investment
He compared today’s edition of the regional championship to the past:
“The financial conditions are much higher now, there is serious investment. At the beginning we played for love, these guys play too, but above all you can see what kind of foreigners are coming and how well they are paid, so the quality is certainly higher than it was.”
Ilirija is Doncic’s “interest zone”, as Doncic family is a crucial figure in the team:
“We are here, our main goal is to definitely stay in the ABA League, and of course the production of young players. This will be our second season in the competition, the first was extremely successful, a couple of young players came out of our club and we want to continue that trend.”
Lakers in Slovenia
Finally, he briefly addressed his son Luka and the Los Angeles Lakers, who had a mini-camp in Slovenia this summer:
“They were there, they had a crazy and unforgettable time, at least that’s what they say. I don’t know, time will tell how it will be. I can’t wait to see what happens. My focus is honestly on Ilirija, but of course I support the Lakers because of Luka and whether Rob Pelinka has built a good team, we’ll see,” he concluded.
