In Brussels, Belgium, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Supervised driver-assistance system chose the wrong lane at one intersection while traveling along narrow city streets, across tram tracks and through complex intersections. The driver did not intervene, although one passenger called the maneuver illegal.

As InsideEVs reports, a video from the robotirl channel condenses an approximately two-hour trip through Brussels and to Charleroi Airport into 17 minutes. The video’s creators generally assessed the system’s performance positively, but the recording also showed situations in which the driver had to monitor its actions.

Complex intersections and police

At the start of the route, the Tesla recognized a car reversing out and continued driving without abrupt braking. Later, the electric vehicle moved aside to let police approaching from behind pass, but during this maneuver it partially blocked a pedestrian crossing.

At one of the complex junctions with roadworks and tram tracks, the passengers were unsure whether it was a roundabout and who had the right of way. Because a navigation point was set inside this interchange, the car drove around it twice before finding the exit.

At another intersection, the Tesla chose the wrong lane and continued driving. According to one passenger, the maneuver was illegal, although the car did not delay or cut off anyone. The driver did not take over control despite the system’s failure to comply with road markings and rules in this situation.

Intervention near the airport

After leaving Brussels, the car independently made an uncontrolled left turn across fast-moving traffic. At the airport passenger drop-off area, however, the Tesla missed the required lane. The driver tried to correct its course using the turn signal, then manually stopped the car to prevent it from entering a staff-only area, and completed the trip independently.

Despite its name, FSD is a suite of driver-assistance systems that requires constant human supervision, rather than a Level 3 autonomous driving system. InsideEVs notes that the system was approved in the Netherlands in April and later appeared in Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania and Estonia. Swedish regulators expressed concerns about the system exceeding speed limits: drivers can set a speed offset of up to 50%.
