Studsvik has selected GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) and Samsung C&T as strategic partners to develop an initial four-unit BWRX-300 SMR project with a combined capacity of 1.2 GW in Sweden (GE Vernova press release, 03/09/2026).
Together with GE Vernova Financial Services and DS Investment Partners, the companies will advance the project under Studsvik’s ReFirm nuclear programme, a multi-site SMR initiative added through Studsvik’s acquisition of Kärnfull Next in 2026.
A project company will be established to own and operate the reactors, with the first unit expected to enter operation in the mid-2030s. The project is planned for development in either Nyköping or at the Målma site in Valdemarsvik, with the final location to be determined during the development phase.
The announcement follows Sweden’s 2026 legislative changes allowing new nuclear reactors to be built outside existing nuclear sites, supported by a SEK220bn (€20bn) state financing framework.
