Maine State Police have identified the man killed in an early-morning shooting outside the Blue Goose Tavern in Lewiston as 37-year-old Travis Hunter of Lisbon.
The shooting occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, outside the tavern at 69 Sabattus Street, according to Maine State Police.
Lewiston police received multiple 911 calls at approximately 12:58 a.m. reporting a disturbance and shots fired outside the popular downtown-area bar.
When officers arrived, they found an adult man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where Hunter was pronounced dead. The woman was treated for her injuries and later released from the hospital.
The Lewiston Police Department subsequently requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South, bringing state detectives to the scene as investigators worked to determine what led to the deadly confrontation.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined that Hunter died from a gunshot wound to the chest. His death has been ruled a homicide.
Police said the adult male believed to have fired the shots has been identified and is cooperating with investigators.
Authorities have not publicly identified that man, and no criminal charges have been announced.
Investigators said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no known danger to the general public.
The homicide comes as Lewiston continues to confront concerns over gun violence and repeated shooting incidents throughout 2026.
The Maine Wire previously reported from the scene Wednesday morning, where a significant law enforcement presence remained outside the Blue Goose hours after the shooting. Detectives with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit could be seen documenting and reconstructing the scene as the investigation unfolded.
Wednesday’s shooting adds another homicide investigation to what has already been a violent year in Maine’s second-largest city.
The investigation remains active.
