Dry weather during recent weeks and months has affected Luxembourg’s potato harvest, limiting tuber growth and reducing yields across several varieties.
Fred Huet, president of the Rural Museum Binsfeld interest association, said potatoes stopped growing due to the dry conditions. For eating and feed potatoes, a production shortfall of around 30% is expected, although the impact varies by variety.
Tuber sizing has also been affected. Smaller potatoes mean additional peeling for consumers, while the reduced length of tubers is expected to affect processing into chips. Huet said there will be no long chips this year.
At Binsfeld, around 100 people participated in the potato harvest on Sunday morning, with the crop collected by lunchtime. The harvest formed part of the local potato festival, which also included a display of tractors.
The next potato harvest at Binsfeld is scheduled for Sunday, 5 September 2027.
