Former Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor has called on the European Commission to completely suspend Serbia’s EU accession negotiations following today’s mass farewell for Ratko Mladić in Belgrade, which was held with the highest state and military honours. “After today’s funeral, involving the anti-civilisational bowing of Serbia to a war criminal convicted of genocide, I expect the incompetent European Commission and its incompetent leader Ursula von der Leyen to fully suspend Serbia’s accession negotiations for entry into the EU. That is the minimum,” Kosor wrote on X.

Index reports that thousands of people gathered in Belgrade to bid a final farewell to the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska. Disgraced Ratko Mladić was buried at Topčider Cemetery with state honours, in the presence of members of the Serbian Army and an honour guard. Numerous Serbian officials, the political leadership of Republika Srpska, and the Russian ambassador to Serbia attended the funeral. Before the burial, his coffin was displayed in the Church of St. Luke, where the service was led by Patriarch Porfirije. On the coffin were his officer’s cap and sabre, and members of the army and veterans of the former Army of Republika Srpska stood beside it. The Serbian Government had previously sent a state aircraft to collect Mladić’s remains from The Hague, and soldiers carried his coffin, covered with the Serbian flag, out of the plane. A commemoration was also held for him on Saturday in an official facility of the Serbian Army.

Mladić died on the 27th of August at the age of 84 in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence. He had suffered several quite serious strokes and his health had been declining rapidly for some time. He was finally convicted of committing genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity, and war crimes during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His forces were responsible, among other things, for the massacre of more than 8,000 innocent Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica in July 1995, as well as for the multi-year, dreadful siege of Sarajevo.

The European Union has already very clearly warned Serbia over the glorification of the vile Ratko Mladić. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos cancelled a planned visit to Serbia after a state aircraft brought his body to Belgrade. The European External Action Service stated that the glorification of war criminals, denial of genocide, and revisionism have no place either in the European Union or in candidate countries. Serbia has otherwise held candidate status for EU membership and has been conducting accession negotiations since 2014.
