People aged 65 to 79 ‘happiest of all’, study suggests

  1. I absolutely hate working. Not my job, that isn’t too bad. I just hate having to give up 40hrs a week to do something I can’t be bothered with so I have enough to survive.

I recon the 65+ folk are just happily retired. I’m only 38 but I can’t bloody wait to retire … if that’s even possible when I reach retirement age.

  2. Demographic which benefitted from the most robust economy and welfare systems in human history and then pulled up the ladder behind them are very happy they got everything and the rest of us get nothing.

In other news, water is wet, the sun is hot and moon has been seen orbitting the earth.

  3. Yeah no shit the generation that had the easiest financial run in history are happiest, most affordable housing, broadest access to final salary pensions to live off of in their paid off houses while my fellow millennials and myself struggle with record high price to income ratios on properties and dogshit DC pensions

  4. Retired people who have nothing to pay out happiest of all. They can spend their retirement money on what they want to and not worry about life.

  5. I can see why women in that age group would get a mood lift; getting past the menopause has to be huge relief. If you’re lucky enough get a decade or two before old age starts to feel like it’s kicking your ass, it must be a nice health plateau.

  6. I’m jealous. Boomers really got to live the good life while later generations have to clean up from the party

  7. Guaranteed income, homeowning so lower overheads, and their own free time to do what they want all day every day, and they’re the happiest? Shock horror!

  8. Probably because they get paid a fuck tonne of money for doing nothing whilst they sit in their homes they paid 10p for and have released tens of thousands in equity to live the life of Riley

  9. I’d say it’s because most (hopefully) people have retired and get to do what they want instead of slaving away making some fucker rich

  10. >Those aged 45 to 59 reported the lowest levels of life satisfaction, with men on average less satisfied than women.

    GenX least happy.

  11. Hate to be the downer here but I’m genuinely curious. Since ‘depressed’ people and those with other mental health issues may of already died one way or another, wouldn’t this significantly influence the statistics?

  12. I know articles like this usually trigger the usual ageist claptrap, though I accept numbers do tell the story…

My mother turned 80 this week. I’d just like to point out she’s as miserable as the rest of us, is struggling on a threadbare pension topped up by pension credit because women in her generation were expected not to work and so had no real chance to build up a pension of their own.

Oh, and she HATES Tories. Has never cast a blue vote, and is sick of being in a demographic wholly blamed for it. So I hope the “all of them” is at least painted more accurately as “a lot of them”.

  13. Its ok when you don’t have to worry about money.

You have a final salary pension which not only did you take away, but you made sure those coming up behind you had to fund for you.

    Amazing

  14. These fuckers, I just hope that they introduce an NHS tax.

    1. Free education

    2. Cheap housing

    3. Easy to find jobs and you could just start a career without a degree

    4. Decades of growth until they could cash out on their retirement

    5. Young people paying for their free healthcare

    No shit they’re happy

Imagine if it felt like the world was made to make you happy.

  15. Real talk, why does no one want the rest of us to be happy? Every time somebody has a good thing it’s like the powers that be want to snatch it away

  16. You mean the people who are litterally the most bitter horrible cunts in the country? Would be nice if they acted like it.

  17. So the ones that got all the final salary pensions, have retired at a time where they can enjoy it and bought their house for pennies is happy? No fucking way.

  18. Hmm, wonder why.

    Oh yeah..

    * People between 16 and 42 have an average net worth of just £7,600.
    * 40% of 22-29 year old people (you know.. the guys who should be trying to get on the housing ladder) have **0 savings.**

    Conversely:

    * The net worth of people aged 55 to 64 reaches as high as £1,000,000.
    * People over-65 have the highest net worth – between £500,000 and £1,000,000.

The generational gap between boomers and everyone else is eyewatering.

But I’m sure it’s just because youngens today just aren’t working hard enough.

  19. Because they were born in the easiest time economically. Buy a couple full sized family houses for dirt cheap. Now that you’re old you’ve got a few hundred thousand. Easy money.

My grandfather god rest his soul bought land for no particular reason, didn’t even use most of it, used a tiny amount of it for a hobby of growing shit.

That land today is worth over 1 million. Of course they’re fucking happy.

  20. They are happily sitting well and are watching the rest of us burn while they try to regress the country to how it was when it benefitted them most.

Fuck them. We need an age limit on voting

  21. The most financially secure people who are retired andgot free higher education, best pensions, unearned and untaxed property wealth (or even property income through dabbling in being a landlord) are the happiest?

    I’m shocked.

  22. Awesome. Just 35+ more years of misery and pain to endure before a short few years of happy retirement before I drop dead.

  23. Honestly, speaking to them i think they’re the most easily triggered, reactionary miserable generation.

There are of course exceptions to this but that generation. Yikes.

  24. The age where you get to make your own decisions and not have to spend half your day doing something you hate just so you can survive? Wow, had no idea

  25. The generation that caused Brexit to annoy foreigners, bought their house for peanuts and have sped up global warming but won’t live to see the consequences are the happiest. I’m shocked.

  26. Nothing quite like sliding into dementia … I’m on that rail ride too, likely. They say you loose things as you age, the mind being one of them.

I’m looking forward to being happy again.
