Bulgarian students record lower results in reading and mathematics in PISA 2025

Bulgarian ninth-graders have recorded lower results in mathematics
and reading in the international PISA 2025 assessment, presented at the
Ministry of Education and Science.

The assessment is conducted every three years by the Organisation
for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The results show that nearly
60% of Bulgarian 15-year-olds perform below the basic level in reading and
mathematics, while almost half of those assessed have serious deficits in
science.

Minister of
Education and Science Georgi Valchev said the results point to problems with the education
model and growing
educational inequality. According
to him, there are problems with basic literacy and a lack of proficiency
in the Bulgarian language, reporter Andrey Borisov said.

The Ministry of
Education and Science is preparing changes to school curricula, assessment
methods, extracurricular activities, and teachers’ additional professional
training.
